Bucks Dragon Boat is proud to announce the inauguration of the Laurie McHugh “Be the Blue” Award. Launching for the 2026 season, this prestigious honor commemorates the legacy of our co-founder, Laurie McHugh, who passed away in 2023. Laurie was more than a leader; she was the heartbeat of our club, a shining star and a beloved figure within the dragon boat community.

The “Be the Blue” Philosophy

The award’s title draws inspiration from Laurie’s own words. While “Be the Blue” references our team colors, it signifies a profound mindset of excellence and character. This honor will be bestowed upon one individual from each team who best exemplifies the core values Laurie championed.

• Positivity: Approaching every practice and race with an infectious smile and genuine kindness for all. (Laurie used to always say that smiling was her favorite!)

• Inclusivity: Ensuring every paddler feels welcomed, valued, and empowered, regardless of their experience level.

• The Ultimate Cheerleader: Demonstrating a spirit that transcends individual teams to support the entire Bucks Dragon Boat family.

• Exceptional Sportsmanship: Exhibiting grace, integrity, and humility in both victory and defeat.

• Dedicated Leadership: Going above and beyond to support club & team operations and mentor new members.

Recognition

The inaugural recipients of the Laurie McHugh “Be the Blue” Award will be announced at the conclusion of the 2026 season.
